In celebration of Pi Day on March 14, Los Medanos College’s Honors Club hosted a Pie in the Face fundraiser along with a bake sale featuring an assortment of treats and homemade Pakistani chai. The festivities took place in the Student Union from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. From donations made by faculty and students to go towards their program, Honors raised over $300.
Five faculty members were nominated to possibly be pied as donations went toward the candidate they wished to see get a face full of whipped cream. Just within the final hour before amounts were counted up, most of the last-minute donations were added to candidates’ jars.
There was a wide range of donations made with the closest candidates to being pied separated by only a few dollars. MESA Director and Biology Professor Briana McCarthy raised $5.20, Student Life Program Coordinator Lindsay Litowitz raised $19.65, Honors Program Director Jen Saito raised $75.13, English professor and Co-Coordinator for Puente Anthony Scoggins raised $102.78, and Political Science Professor Ryan Hiscocks raised $106.93.
Honors Club Officer Chijioke Onyeagucha helped during the bake sale and had good things to say about the event.
“I like seeing the different faces that come and [it’s a] great way to raise money for Honors Club,” he said.
Honors student Daniela Hernandez was also enthusiastic about seeing the “competitive sides of professors,” from the entertainment the event brings.
A large crowd gathered in the last minutes leading up to the count to find out who would get pied with suspenseful music playing as the donations were tallied.
Honors Director Saito was in good spirits as she awaited the potential of being pied.
“I have a sense of humor about it, it’s a great event,” she said.
With the announcement of Hiscocks raising the most donations, the large group gathered outside to see the professor pied in the face. He was a good sport and laughed along with attendees with a face full of whipped cream.
“It didn’t cut off my airways so I could breathe, Hiscocks said. “Overall I think it was more pleasurable than I thought it would be.”
Hiscocks was more than happy to participate in the fun.
“I am heavily involved with honors, so yeah, I would absolutely do this again,” he said.
Honors Club President Muskaan Adeel had the honor of smashing the pie in his face. Adeel who was also part of the event in the past, describes the outcome as “successful.”
“It went so well, I am so happy [and] very grateful,” Adeel said.
