May 3, 2023
The LMC baseball team finished off their season on Thursday, April 27 with a demolishing victory, winning 18-7 during an away game at Laney College. Winning this game meant the Mustangs would secure their spot as the number one team in the Bay Valley conference, and that goal was their motivation to lead them to the victory.
The Mustangs came out the gates on fire as they garnered eight runs through singles by six different players. Two of those singles scored two runners to extend their lead. While the Mustangs were building up an insane lead, the Eagles did manage to score two runs off a groundout and a wild pitch.
The team totaled three home runs during the game, two made by newly awarded Bay Valley Conference MVP Ryan Pierce while the other by BVC Rookie of the Year Micheal Weber. Pierce scored the first home run in the top of the 7th inning, followed by a two-run home run by Michael Weber after Bubba Rocha walked. Not to be outdone, Pierce smacked another home run in the top of the eighth inning, setting the score to 18-2 guaranteeing their victory and clinching first place in the conference.
LMC pitcher Ryan Radkey pitched a stellar game going seven innings allowing two runs, three walks, and striking out five. Pierce went 4-6 in the game hitting two home runs and scoring four runs while Kris Leffle went 4-5 hitting four singles scoring three times from teammates.
The offense was dominant throughout the game as they had 21 hits while the Laney defense committed six errors to aid the Mustangs scoring. Laney had no response to the commanding showing from LMC until the bottom of the ninth inning as they would score five runs to cut the lead to 18-7. However, Laney second baseman Ronald Gay grounded out to third baseman Pierce, ending the comeback for the Eagles.
The game came to an end at 18-7 with an amazing finale. This victory means that the Mustangs will be heading to the first round of the NorCal Regionals as the number 10 seed in the league, where they’ll face off against the 15th seeded ranked Ohlone College at Los Medanos College starting on Friday May 5. The last time Ohlone and LMC faced off was the first game of the season for the Mustangs as it ended in a 11-10 victory for LMC.
