When it comes to finding a job, it’s not as easy as it sounds. There must be requirements and certain traits you must have in order to seem fit for the job you’re applying for. Now, would it be so crazy if companies were denying people because they were a part of a certain generation?
Generation Z or also known as “Gen Z,” is the demographic of people who grew up using the internet and are often looked down upon by the older generations, as they claim that they are lazy and lack in a lot of areas when it comes to their jobs.
According to a report by Intelligent, “1 in 6 companies are hesitant to hire recent college graduates” because they are hard to work with and difficult to manage.
When asked about the topic of whether GenZers themselves believe that they lack a work ethic, many had a lot to say.
Student Rebecca Pedrazzi agrees that Gen Z can be considered lazy. “I think it’s true that everyone in the Gen Z community can be dedicated but they tend to do the least that they possibly can at their jobs,” says Pedrazzi.
Pedrazzi works at Chipotle and claims that she works pretty fine, but if she wants to put in that extra effort she can make the conscious decision to do so.
Student Mariza Soto, who juggles two jobs and school, argued that because everything is costly nowadays, many are trying to apply for multiple jobs to make ends meet.
“I think it’s so important to consider that because everything costs so much more, people have to get multiple jobs and it’s still not enough. It might seem like we’re lazy but it’s just a hard time to get a job,” said Soto.
Student Jordan Odhiambo, also agrees that the lives of Gen Z aren’t the same as what older generations had to go through. “Generally for our life, our way of living is going to be more expensive. I don’t think we are lazy, I think we’re complacent,” said Odhiambo.
Student Soleil Rabsatt provides a different perspective,“I don’t believe it as Gen Z myself, it depends on the person and their lifestyle. Even if we don’t have some stuff that other generations have, we do have knowledge and access to use technology,” said Rabsatt.
Another hit at Gen Z has been that they lack communication skills, to which student Jaden Ellis has a very strong opinion on this. “I think it’s false, you need basic communication skills to get any job. Communication is the borderline key to everything,” said Ellis.
“I feel like the issue is that we set boundaries more and do not tolerate disrespect from our higher-ups. We don’t let the company bully us into doing things that we don’t want to do. Gen Z is communicating and making a lot of changes happening. We have protests and strikes going on that send the message that we want to give, our wants and needs are being ignored or our rights are run over,” said Ellis, who was very passionate on the subject of the perception of Gen Z as a whole.
It’s clear that Gen Z have strong opinions on what others have to say about them. They’re able to make use of their skills at their jobs, and are willing to learn while always not letting others step on them.
