Students will get the opportunity to build their leadership skills at Los Medanos College’s 16th annual Impact conference. The retreat, which is hosted by Student Life, Equity and Inclusion, and LMC’s Associated Students, is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Pittsburg Campus Student Union Conference Center.
Designed to motivate students and inspire them on their journeys as leaders, there will be opportunities for them to participate in various discussions about leadership and network with others.
“This is an opportunity for students to connect with one another and gain valuable insight into college clubs, and network with one another,” LMCAS President Armon Gonzalez said.
He explained the conference will be structured into three breakout sessions with each having three to four breakout rooms for students to participate in. The rooms are planned to cover topics like LinkedIn, financial literacy, and more.
“This conference allows students to learn extremely valuable skills that can help them both in and out of school,” Gonzalez said. “Many students are transferring this coming spring so this gives them a bit of insight into what colleges are looking for.”
The retreat is open to students across the college district and is organized to be a collaboration between LMC, DVC, and CCC’s associated students.
There are plans to have all three schools host their own breakout rooms during one of the sessions which Gonzalez said would each cover different topics.
Participants will also get to hear the perspectives of guest speakers at the conference, including Contra Costa Community College District Chancellor Mojdeh Mehdizadeh.
Interim Director of Student Life and LMCAS Advisor Robert Delgado said that there is a lot of student involvement in the organization of the event.
“It’s a good conference that’s student-led,” Delgado said. “LMCAS is funding it so they get to talk about what they want to see happening at the conference.”
Along with the various leadership opportunities, Delgado added that he thinks students will also have lots of fun winning prizes from the giveaways that day. In addition to the activities, free breakfast and lunch will also be provided at the conference.
Gonzalez said that there will be an opportunity for clubs to table at the end of the conference. He added that there are still not any confirmed, but all clubs are welcome to participate.
